Costco and Uber Eats Team Up to Offer Grocery Delivery

One of the greatest joys in life is shopping at Costco. But the second greatest joy? Having Costco products well-stocked at home — without the hassle.

A new Costco partnership with Uber Eats is one of several Uber features to roll out this May, and it allows any Uber user to shop from Costco via the app — no membership necessary. That means no parking lots, no cart crashes, no long waits at the checkout, or hauls of the 48-pack of eggs and oversized boxes of frozen fish sticks into your trunk. Sure, you’ll miss out on the free samples (unless you have a really talented on-site shopper) and legendary food court, but you can sit on the couch or stay busy with whatever you’re doing while you outsource the hard stuff. Just don’t forget to tip generously.

Known for its bulk offerings, Costco can also be a great source for solo at-home eaters, hosts, and meal prep enthusiasts. The rotisserie chicken remains a tried-and-true fan fave, the Kirkland Signature shrimp cocktail is a steal, and a 6-pack of Veuve Clicquot is a deal that anyone can get behind. Those who have semi-regular recipes in their rotation can also use Costco to stock up on staples — boxes of broth, frozen protein and produce, pasta and so much more.

Already, Costco ships and delivers much of its inventory to members who order online, but doesn’t offer its own same-day delivery, like many major grocery stores. Now, non-members can take advantage of Costco’s delights instantaneously via Uber Eats. Better yet, Costco members who input their membership ID into Uber Eats will be eligible for additional discounts and a 20% discount on an annual Uber One membership. Uber One members get 10% off all eligible Uber orders, plus a $0 delivery fee for participating restaurants and stores.

Costco and grocery delivery enthusiasts may already know some hacks to get their hands on that good Kirkland product sans membership — Instacart, for one. Well, Instacart loyalists may soon be Uber Eats lovers too. The two delivery platforms are teaming up for food delivery of all types, with Instacart managing the grocery logistics and Uber Eats handling restaurant takeout. This summer, Instacart users will be introduced to a restaurants tab, powered by Uber Eats, offering local and national restaurant delivery. In addition to $0 delivery fees on grocery orders, Instacart+ members will also get free delivery on all restaurant orders over $35.

“Our goal is to make it effortless for people to go anywhere and get anything,” said Dara Khosrowshahi, Uber’s CEO.  “We’re excited that this new strategic partnership with Instacart will bring the magic of Uber Eats to even more consumers, drive more business for restaurants, and create more earnings opportunities for couriers.”

DoorDash better watch out.
