The circular economy system is necessary to reduce the exploitation of natural resources, minimize environmental impact, and create sustainable economic value since it also affects public prosperity improvement, Deputy Governor of Central Java Taj Yasin Maimoen said here on Tuesday.
All related parties must demonstrate that they believe Central Java’s economy can be accelerated despite the risk of recession, for instance, by maximizing the effect of the circular economy, he added.
To support the implementation of the circular economy system, the provincial government has formulated the 2021–2030 Central Java Low-Carbon Development document, which is currently being reviewed by the National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas).
The provincial government has also carried out several activities oriented toward climate change mitigation and adaptation as well as the transition to green economy.
It has also formulated the 2024–2026 Regional Development Plan by integrating green economy within the issue of competitive, sustainable, and resilient economy as well as natural resources and environmental resiliency.
Strategic issues within the document comprise low-carbon development, climate change mitigation, climate-resilient development (climate change adaptation), and spatial planning policy.
There is a lot of potential for circular economy implementation in Central Java, for instance, in agriculture and plantation for developing regenerative agricultural practices and eco-friendly plantations.
Such practices involve the use of organic fertilizers, a reduction in chemical pesticide usage, and the management of agricultural waste.
In the renewable energy sector, Central Java has many sources of renewable energy such as geothermal, hydro, and bioenergy.
The use of these energy sources will reduce dependency on fossil energy and support the transition to greener energy.
Maimoen also highlighted that the potential implementation of the circular economy in the creative economy and tourism sector based on local wisdom and natural resources can create new jobs and improve Central Java’s economic competitiveness.
“Sustainable tourism can also be integrated into the circular economy concept such as the development of tourist villages, which prioritize the principles of sustainability and environmental preservation,” he said.
